More Handmade Books

Here are the books I've been making recently.  I've been experimenting with different sizes and designs so that I can offer a handmade book for my next giveaway.

After trying it for the first time yesterday, I really like the idea of offering a set of matchbook notebooks for free on my blog.  Maybe a set of two or three as they're so quick and easy to make and they are fun to embellish.  I made this one by using this tutorial:

Here are the other two books I made but for one reason or another, they didn't come out how I wanted them, so no good for the giveaway.

This one has been bound by hand using waxed cotton thread  It was then embellished with punched flower shapes and illustrated with black ink.

This one has also been bound by hand using waxed cotton thread.  I then punched an entwined hearts shape through the front cover and then drew around the shape with a white gel pen.  I think the pen marks look like I used white-out!

So those are my latest bookbinding adventures with more to come soon since I really want to make one or more that are good enough to give away on this blog.

Finally!

What I mean is that I've finally made a book that I'm proud of! After much learning and practising I've made this book using 100% recycled paper pages and a cover made of brown kraft card.  The leaf on brown background is actually a piece of handmade paper (but not handmade by me) and I think it finishes it off nicely.  I bound it by sewing using off-white cotton string.  I'm really proud of this book and I hope it shows that I made it with a lot of love and care.

If you would like to have it for yourself or as a lovely gift it is available here.

Bookbinding Adventures

I made another book this week.  I'm still not entirely happy with the final results but I'm learning so much from practising that it's still gratifying.  I'm reading about lots of methods from tutorials on the net and sometimes adapting them to my own preferences.  One thing I really do love about experimenting is the use of recycled/upcycled materials such as old envelopes, cardboard inserts from tshirts/clothes and recycled printer paper.  I also really enjoy the sewing of them too.

I just wanted to show my attempts so far for my own benefit and for anyone else who may be interested.  This is the book I made today using the materials I stated above:

Here are the others I've made over the last 6 months or so:

So there's the mish-mash of different looks and styles but I know I'll get better if I just keep trying. Wish me luck!

Handmade Oriental Style Book by Lucy Jackson

Hi,

I recently entered Lucy Jackson's Your Journal competition where she asked commenters to state what style or theme they would like for a journal and she would make a book in the winner's theme and send it to them.  There were lots of great suggestions and the one I chose was an oriental themed book.  I feel so lucky to have won because I love handmade books! Here is the book she designed and sent to me:

Isn't it beautiful?  I absolutely love it so thanks Lucy! I can't wait to fill it with all of my ideas and designs, although I do get that feeling now and then like I don't really want to put anything in it at all because it's so lovely.

I won a blog giveaway!

I participated in Lucy Jackson's giveaway where I had to leave a comment about the type of handmade journal I would like to see her make next and then I'd have a chance of winning it. I asked for an oriental themed one and I won it! I haven't entered that many competitions before and this was the first one I have ever won. I'm so chuffed!

I'd previously noticed Lucy's work on Etsy and Folksy and I'm really pleased to have won one of her journals as they always look really well made with fun designs.

I will be sure to blog about the journal when I receive it and show you some pics.
