EDM 4 - Draw Your Mug or Cup

At last!! I've finally done the next EDM challenge and I'm proud of myself for keeping at it.  I'm not completely happy with this cup because it's supposed to be white and I just couldn't do it properly because I kept finding shadows and reflections.  But then when I tried to represent the shadows and relfections it just looked messy and even less like a white cup (see stylized version).  Very frustrating. In the end I just put my own shading on it (final drawing).

Here are some sketches, a stylized version and the final drawing.  I'm not sure which of the bottom two to post on flickr though.  Any suggestions please?

Stace-Ann you have some nice drawings here. I particularly like the very first one, top left and the really dark one in the centre.

Keep in mind that when looking at a cup from the side, the curvature of the top edge and the bottom edge will be the same. And unless you are looking into the top of the cup, you won't be able to see such a wide lip. If you ARE looking from the top of the cup, you won't be able to see so much of the side of the cup.

Try holding a cup at eye level, then holding it slightly above your eye level so you're looking more at the bottom of the cup and again hold the cup below eye level, so you're looking more on the inside. Notice what happens to the curves of the lip and bottom edge and what happens to the sides of the cup. In each instance you see either more or less. That's called elliptical perspective.

That's a very simple explanation, but you have a good start on these drawings. Really good shading and values, too.

Keep up the great work.

Now those are nice mugs...............I must get to sketchng....have been concentrating on w/c's and get lost in that. Our winter has been so long and we still have so much snow that i'm doing flowers to cheer myself up...but a mug might do the trick too. Keep up the good work. I am a total beginner you are way ahead of this old gal.................

Stage-ann: wonderful drawings. Great shading. Try being looser. Take your pencil and hold it with thumb and fore finger as if you were going to make a large shadow mark. What you want to do is hester drawing the cup. You need toferl its round surface. Before you start this, pick up the cup and close your eyes. Trace the cup with your finger - from the handle to handle, all the way down and then up. Put its shape in your mind.
then hester drawing. Then rest. Think about the cup. Have some warm tea. About hour after thinking - set up- draw the cup as you see it. Next, lesson, comment on tomorrow.
Sherrie. Great work!

the word is not hester but Jester. Excuse my iPhone. He likes to spell for me. Especially, when I blink my eyes.

Thank you all for the comments. It looks as if I've gotten some free drawing lessons too! Bonny I really do have trouble with my ellipticals so thanks for the advice and Sherrie I have tried loosening up but I never like the results which seem more like rough sketches than proper drawings. I will try practising some more though and see what happens.

I have trouble with elliptical lines too, but I think you did a terrific job here overall!
